The influx of migrants from Eastern Europe has helped fuel a massive increase in the number of pupils who do not speak English as their main language.

Campaigners say the figures highlight the strain put on schools who are struggling to educate the 1.1million children who speak in another tongue.

Anastasia De Waal, from think-tank Civitas, warned the problem of resources risked damaging the education of all youngsters.
