More than a quarter of European doctors applying to work in Britain have been turned away after failing English tests.

The revelation raises fears that hundreds of medics were allowed through before checks were imposed two years ago and are now working in hospitals and GP surgeries.

Yesterday Britain’s top surgeon warned the exams are still insufficient as they fail to check doctors’ grasp of basic medical vocabulary.
