Normally, the book gets back a few days later, a small fine follows – and there is an embarrassed apology to the librarian.

But new figures have shown that three books are more than 15 years overdue in Lincolnshire – with no sign of them being returned soon.

And a total of 59,493 are currently overdue in the county.
