Tube chiefs today came under fire over lengthy closures to escalators as it was revealed that Oxford Circus is the worst hit station.

It comes as passenger anger mounts over the time it takes to carry out repairs, prompted by the closure last week of Embankment station to Bakerloo and Northern line passengers during 10 months of escalator replacement works.

A Freedom of information request by the London Assembly Liberal Democrats found that three sets of escalators at Oxford Circus were shut for 62 weeks for replacement works completed in summer 2011.
