As the Government unveiled plans to force hospitals to publish staffing levels, it has been revealed that some NHS wards are being manned by one nurse for an entire night.

In response to a Freedom of Information request, the Royal College of Nursing found some wards staffed by a single nurse and a huge reliance on temporary staff to cover night shifts.

The RCN said leaving patients under the care of one person was not safe and labelled the practice ‘unacceptable’.
