Prince Charles, one of Britain’s biggest landowners, has strongly criticised the Government over its cuts to flood defences on private land.

In blunt letters to the Environment Agency, the quango charged with protecting the countryside, Charles questioned the ‘morality’ of the cuts.

But last night critics warned him to ‘stay out of politics’ and said his intervention left him vulnerable to allegations of a conflict of interest.
