A cash-strapped council paid out almost £300,000 in compensation to staff, including £3,250 to a worker who tripped over a traffic cone and £1,250 to an employee who suffered an electric shock.

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, which needs to save £38 million by 2018, also dished out £2,800 to a person who fell on hot tarmac, £1,250 to a worker who lost their tooth in an accident, £300 to a person whose ring was caught in a door and £1,000 to someone who suffered bruising after being hit by a door.
